Music & Maine

Rebecca DeWan is the Libra Assistant Professor of Choral/General Music Education at the University of Maine where she teaches undergraduate music education courses and conducts Collegiate Chorale. Specializing in trauma-informed and equity-centered education, she regularly collaborates with teachers to connect research to the classroom. At conferences across the country, she has presented on topics such as trauma-informed practices, gender and identity in the music classroom, and contemporary a cappella. Her extensive time in the classroom informs her research and fuels her passion for preservice teacher preparation. Dr. DeWan taught 5–12 choral/general music in Houlton, ME, for four years, and then she spent nine years at Noble High School (North Berwick, ME) as the 8–12 choral teacher. Additionally, she taught K–2 general music in Falmouth, ME. Rebecca earned a bachelor’s of music education and master’s in choral conducting from the University of Southern Maine and a Ph.D. in music education from Michigan State University. She has conducted honors festivals in Maine and New Hampshire, and she was named the Maine ACDA 2018 Outstanding Choral Director of the Year. She is committed to building community through music.

Rebecca feels a deep love and connection to Maine and New England. She spends her time exploring state parks, hiking, cooking, and enjoying nature. The silver lining of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the opportunity to explore parts previously unknown areas of her home state during the beautiful summer months.
